Author Topic: Substance Painter to Arnold (C4D) Workflow?  (Read 1870 times)

Hi Good Day!

May I ask for your help in having in Substance Painter/Arnold (C4D) workflow?

I understand that there is no 1:1 ratio of Substance Painter(SP) and Arnold (ARN) viewport due to different algorithms. But the problem is I could not even get a 1:0.8 ratio or any decent conversion. I watched several tutorials and applied what they have showed, but I still couldn't get it to look right. Some of these are the following. See appendix below for reference used.

To speed things up, you can see my overall problem in this image https://www.dropbox.com/s/zyf36mq22blyco9/c4d018_arnold_SP.jpg?dl=0. I have also copied the environment from the SP and used it to relight in Arnold C4D. You can see the project files here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/myb70dq1lwhdqok/AAAroDBdGWW-5MLpzlXVj4pGa?dl=0 .

There must be some button/setting I'm missing out. I'm just not sure what it is.  Thank you in advance for your time/

Hey, I don't know if it will cover some of your points, but did you look at this in depth tutorial from Olivier Couston?

Hi Vincent. Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have checked that post beforehand. (It was an inspiring post BTW).
The catch is that the featured artist uses AlSurface Shaders (a somewhat additional nodes for Arnold). I don't use such shaders. Moreover, I hope I don't sound condescending to mention this, AlSurface are deemed obsolete in the release of C4DtoA 2.0 or (Arnold 5 Core). Even the creator of Al Surface have no plans in updating the Al Surface for Arnold 5. (Currently, Al Surface does not work in Arnold 5)

Maybe someone with more xp than me with Arnold would be able to assist you.

Thanks for the reply Vincent.

I had a go in MtoA and followed the documentation for Arnold 5 (https://support.allegorithmic.com/documentation/display/integrations/Arnold+5+for+Maya) and this is the result. I would say this is pretty close with the substance painter. Redid it with the C4DtoA. The result is not that far-off but I'll say MtoA is better with details. I reckon this has something to with the metalness parameter in C4D, but I'm not so sure. The reason is that I can still modify the IOR in C4D despite putting a Map into the metalness and modification also changes the final image. In MtoA, IOR is already locked when map is inserted.

I'm putting this issue to rest. I'm generally happy with what I came up with. Still, looking forward for other work arounds, if there are any

P.S. Make sure to follow the Allegorithmic's Arnold 5 version and not the older version. I kinda wasted my time with the older version trying to work out it.*

I can't :( That's the first thing I did but it seems to be set in stone.
When I registered, I thought I was putting the email, but I ended up putting in the username.
