Author Topic: Save PNG with transparent background + Save camera position in 3D viewport  (Read 2738 times)

Hello,

I want to propose 2 different features but that are connected to each other in order to achieve the same goal: I want to create quick previews/thumbnails of my substances in the form of .png images, so I visually know what a substance contains without having to open the archive. This would be very useful as my substance library grows.

To achieve that goal and have a consistent look to the materials I propose these 2 features:

1) Save Render as PNG with transparent background
Actually when I hit "Camera > Save Render", it makes a screenshot of the 3D viewport with the background. I know the background environment can be disabled, but I don't want a dark grey background either. I think only the mesh with the substance applied on it should be saved and all pixels that aren't part of the mesh should have their alpha transparent (like when saving a render as a .png from 3ds max).

2) Save camera position in 3D viewport as a preset file
It would be nice to be able to save the camera's position in the 3D view so we can retrieve the same point of view between different scenes. This would allow making consistent screenshots.
I believe it could be saved as an external file, something like a preset, thus allowing to save as many points of view as needed.

What do you guys think?

Hey, your second feature has been added to the latest version
For the first one, if you make an Iray render, and save it as png, you should have the transparency.

About that camera position... Does Painter do that too?
(I'm hoping so, and that I somehow overlooked it in the release notes.)

Okay, thanks.

Looking forward to it being in the frontlog.  ;)

LOL - Literally!   ;D

Love that picture.  It's been a long day here, and I needed that.  Thanks.   :)

Ahhh, it would be a game changer if we could render the 3d viewport like Marmoset or Unreal, I'd use Unreal but apparently my computer can't manage to build the basic lightning. And exporting everything always takes a lot of extra time.

Rendering the viewport with transparency would be a big plus.

Going to look for this in the Uservoice.

Can you explain how to do it please?

For the png transparency, you just have to choose png as file format when you're saving your file. And for default you get the transparent background. File formats are usually displayed below the box where you type the file name.

Thanks for the answer, but in fact it was the second question  ;D
I wasn't clear maybe... sorry.

So, the question is:
How do you save the camera position in the 3d viewport?

3d view/scene/create 3d resource from current scene.

I am really sorry Vincent, but I don't get it  :(

I tried, it's worked, moving the view, loading a new 3d model, moving ...
But, at the end, I lost my initial 3d view position (the one when I saved the 3d model "Create 3d ressource from current scene....").

Do am I missing something?
It's not a big deal of course.
It is just to create a same preview of all my substance, with the same 3d mesh and the same camera angle.

Indeed there is something strange.. I'll check with the team.

Ok thanks.
But nothing important... keep in mind the picture of the big iceberg::) ;D
