Author Topic: Materialize Contest - WIP - "Anka metal coatings"  (Read 369 times)

Hello there!

I wanted to post my WIP-entry from the very beginning actually. But then there was a delay for I wnated to have some results first. And now that the Contest is halfway through I feel I begin making progress. At last!

Well, I am quite new to Substance Designer and my work is not related to CG or gamedev, at least for now. I wish it was. Anyway, I wanted to take part in this event and see what I am capable of.

I decided to take something which is not basic, something a bit more complicated. I chose this "Anka Metal Coatings", which I believed to be quite interesting to recreate.

Man! That is a CHALLENGE. That bottom pattern is tricky.

I'll post my progress a bit later. Good luck everyone! May the force be with us!

This is a hardcore one - that line pattern is already giving me nightmares :)
Good luck man :)

 :D Thanks a lot!

Well, here's a piece of my small pattern.

And there's a fragment of the material. It requires further tuning, there's a lot to do, I guess.

Wow, that looks so nice! I've been trying to figure out how to achieve that pattern. keep up the good work!

Thanks, lirio!

Figuring out how to recreate that pattern wasn't easy at all. I tried different combinations of warps an stuff like that. Trying to make some flow map (using vector warp/morph nodes) was a real torture. And my present graph is way less sophisticated than that. Though it's quite a mess  ;D

A small update

Supercool! I would kill to see that graph ;-)

Thanks, man! I appreciate that. :)
I will post the graph after the contest. For now, it requires a decent clean-up. :D

You nailed it! Looking awesome

Thank you so much! :D

There's another thing. The contest requires materials to be creative. And tweakable. Creatively tweakable. I'm trying to think of some interesting parameters to expose.
Any ideas, maybe? :)

This is looking phenominal, well in!

I'm not sure how tweakable your shapes are so perhaps expose the metal's properties. Ranging from shiny and new to aged and scratched/worn.

@CptQwark, thank you!
Yes, that was exactly what I was thinking about. The age. I don't know for sure what metal is depicted on the reference. But maybe it might have some patina or dirt/dust layer. I'm trying to understand the background and to develop an idea. Hope I'll manage to complete it by the deadline.

I don't know for sure what metal is depicted on the reference.

A quick Google Search looks like this is actually cut from MDF and painted in an "antique gold finish". Well that's completely changed how I see this image.  :o
