Substance Painter Texturing for Beginners

A complete, self-paced course for learning how to texture using Substance Painter. The course is split into 3 categories, fundamentals, model preparation and scifi crate project.

Fundamentals teaches the core aspects of the software and is a great starting point for new users. If you would like to jump right in using a project-based approach, with a faster pace, then the Scifi crate project is what you need. The model preparation chapter covers important aspects of texturing such as texel density, UV mapping, material and baking setup.

Software: Substance Painter
Version: 1.4 and higher

Prerequisites: Understanding of a 3D application.

Got two little questions:

Substance Painter Tutorial – Model Preparation 03: Tangents & shading for Normal maps
at 8:32 the setting was made to "OpenGL"

is this really necessary?

Would it be the same result, if I set it just to "DirectX" and bake, then
use the Unity5 shader export-presets?

Like the preset take care on OGL/DX normal map on export?

And how to export FBX from modo with Tangents & Bi Normals?

Cheers!

HI Elowan,

Yes, that's correct and a good point : )  I don't think you technically need to do this as when you export using the Unity preset it will convert from DX to Unity. I think I was thinking in terms of a straight unity pipeline where you are only creating content for Unity, but in the end it could just be converted as well.

HI Elowan,

I would say its not relevant anymore. Please take a look at this section I added in our docs. I just added this earlier in the week. I updated the sticky thread in the Unity forums as this is the proper workflow now. We are working with Unity to help them to figure out the issues they are having as well.
