Author Topic: Controlling type of compressed (Zip) folders  (Read 1798 times)

This is a strange one.

I uploaded directly from Substance Designer to Substance Share, and it worked fine.  It make a "Zip" file as expected.

But...

When I "exported" my substance to my own computer, and told it to make an Archive file, it put the files in a WinZip file.   Huh???

I used to have WinZip installed once upon a time, but not any more.  It is uninstalled.
If I right-click on a file, and can Send it to a regular Zip file (not a WinZip file).

Why did Substance Designer decide to create a WinZip archive file?
How do I change it?

Hey justaviking,

how did you export directly from Substance Designer to an archive file? Can your list your steps please?

Hi Fabian,

1) Export with dependencies...
2) Checkmark "Build Archive"

I did the Step 2, wondering if that archive might include something I overlooked when I did it manually (to Edit a previously uploaded substance).

That's how I ended up with a WinZip file somehow.

RELATED QUESTION:

What are the standards for "Zip" files uploaded to Substance Share.

I just tried to download the "Stylized Rock Generator" (https://share.allegorithmic.com/libraries/1026) and it's in a 7-Zip format (.7z extension).

I don't have that on my system currently.

So far I have encountered:
  • Zip --- Windows standard (?)
  • WinZip
  • 7zip

How about PKzip?  Any others?

The problem with installing multiple things like that on one system is they all want to be the one in charge.  And I hate paying for one, and I also hate chasing trial installations from various sites of questionable integrity.

We try to keep everything as zip, a 7z may have slipped through the cracks.
However, I would recommend anyone to get 7zip, it's totally free and supports all the zip formats (zip, 7z, rar, etc.)

Thanks for the reply.

It's been a while since I've looked at the various Zip utilities, so thanks for the tip about 7zip.

Using the "Export with dependencies" option I end up with a .7z file every time. I can open it with WinRar just fine though.

I also used to have WinZip, it came on a CD in a magazine, that must have been 10 years ago though. Another reminder of my ever fading youth  ::)

Interesting.  I'm pretty sure that's how I got a .7z file too.
But the day before, when I uploaded directly to Substance Share (from within SD), it created a .zip file.

Might be time for someone to take a peak at the code, especially if the Substance Share goal is to standardize on the .zip format.  It would be good if "export with dependencies" also created a .zip file.

Why not just stick with .zip files there is built in support for .zip files in both Mac & PC so there is no need to download and install more apps that will just spy on you and get all winey with ads and shit like that...
